Breaking the Cycle: What the Bible Says About Curses and Blessings
Life is full of choices, and each decision we make can lead us toward blessings or keep us trapped in cycles of struggle.
The Bible makes it clear that our choices determine whether we walk in blessings or curses.
Proverbs 3:33 (NIV) – "The Lord’s curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous."
Galatians 6:7-8 (NIV) – "Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life."
If we take a serious look at our own lives, we can identify some negative cycles that have plagued our families from generation to generation. Poverty, sickness, broken relationships. And many times we just pass it off without realizing we may be dealing with generational or personal curses.
But the good news is, and I will continue to emphasize, that through Christ, every curse can be broken, and we can step into the blessings God has for us.
Deuteronomy 30:19 (AMP) tells us God sets before us blessings and curses. “I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse; therefore, you shall choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants.”
So we make the choice. We have the power to choose a new path. God presents us with two paths—one leads to blessings, the other to curses. But we have to know that our choices have consequences.
It is clear, Family, that blessings come through obedience. We begin with the good news. Obedience leads to favour, provision, and protection.
Deuteronomy 28:1-2 (KJV) – “And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe and to do all his commandments which I command thee this day, that the Lord thy God will set thee on high above all nations of the earth: And all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God.”
On the other hand, curses come through disobedience.
Deuteronomy 28:15 (NLT) – “But if you refuse to listen to the Lord your God and do not obey all the commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come and overwhelm you.”
So we have to understand that disobedience to God’s Word opens the door to curses, which can manifest as hardship, struggle, and oppression.
Question is: What opens the door to a curse?
Isaiah 1:19-20 (MSG) – “If you’ll willingly obey, you’ll feast like kings. But if you’re willful and stubborn, you’ll die like dogs. That’s right. God says so.”
It’s really pretty straightforward…in theory…when we ignore God’s commands, we step outside of His protection and we give the enemy access to operate in our lives.
I do not believe that there is anyone here involved in this. But, just in case there is, we have to be told that witchcraft, horoscopes, fortune-telling, and other occult practices bring curses because they invite demonic influence.
Leviticus 20:6 (AMP) - “As for the person who turns to mediums and to spiritists, to play the prostitute after them, I will also set My face against that person and will cut him off from his people.”
What else opens the door to curses? Unforgiveness. And a lot of us are walking around in denial. We said we forgive but we really don’t, because we bring up the hurts of the past every opportunity we get, and feel justified in making the offender guilty all over again.
The Bible tells us in Matthew 6:14-15 (KJV) – “For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
Forgiveness is a difficult subject. But we must get to the place where we understand that holding on to unforgiveness keeps us in bondage and blocks the flow of God’s blessings.
Let it go somebody. Don’t keep dwelling on the hurts of the past. Receive forgiveness. Give forgiveness and move right along in Jesus Name.
Today, we rejoice in the fact that no curse is greater than God’s power. No curse can stand against God’s people. Hallelujah. The God we serve has the power to reverse the curse. Through Christ, every curse can be broken. No demonic force can override God’s authority in our lives.
Numbers 23:23 (KJV) – “Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel: according to this time it shall be said of Jacob and of Israel, What hath God wrought!”
The Bible tells us, Family, that a curse without cause cannot land and we have to walk in that confidence. If we are living righteously, curses have no legal right to affect us.
Proverbs 26:2 (AMP) – “Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, so a curse without cause does not come and alight [on the undeserving].”
As Christians, we believe that Jesus redeemed us from the curse. Jesus took our curses so that we could receive the blessings of Abraham.
Galatians 3:13-14 (NLT) – “But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing… Through Christ Jesus, God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised to Abraham.”
Having started to identify these generational curses, we need to now know how to break the cycle.
First of all, we have to repent and renounce sin. We must acknowledge where we may have opened doors to curses and turn away from those actions.
1 John 1:9 (KJV) – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
We then have to speak and declare God’s blessings. Speak life over our families, finances, health, and future.
Proverbs 18:21 (AMP) – “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words.”
And then we have to walk in obedience. Consistently following God’s Word ensures that we stay under His blessing.
James 1:25 (MSG) – “But whoever catches a glimpse of the revealed counsel of God—the free life!—even out of the corner of his eye, and sticks with it, is no distracted scatterbrain but a man or woman of action. That person will find delight and affirmation in the action.”
Today, we want to continue the discussion on breaking the cycle of generational curses.
Curses and blessings are real, and they are influenced by our choices. But the cycle of curses can be broken through repentance, obedience, determination and faith in Jesus Christ. When we choose to walk in God’s ways, we step into the fullness of His blessings.
Now is the time to examine our lives. Let us make a decision today to break the cycle of generational curses and walk in the generational blessings God has for us.
