Obedience and Breakthrough: Walking in the Power of God’s Blessings
I believe that all of us here want to continue to receive the blessings of the Lord. Correct?
Whether the world admits it or not, we cannot survive without the blessings of God.
Sinner and saint all benefit from God's common grace - His kindness and blessings given to all people, regardless of their faith, such as life, nature, and opportunities.
However, there is a special grace that is available only to those who trust and obey God. This is the saving and transformative grace that leads to salvation and spiritual growth.
So these blessings are reserved for those who are obedient:
1. Salvation and Eternal Life – John 3:36
2. Peace Beyond Understanding - Philippians 4:7
3. Divine Guidance – Proverbs 3:5-6
4. Answered Prayers – 1 John 3:22
5. Spiritual Growth and Fruitfulness – John 15:5
So it stands to reason that if we want to receive breakthrough from generational curses and walk in the power of God’s blessings, we must be obedient to His commands.
Obedience to God, Family, is the key that unlocks His blessings.
In the Bible, there are many examples where we see people experiencing favour, protection, and breakthrough when they are obedient to God.
One of the clearest examples is found in the life of Abraham. God called him to leave his country, his people, and his father’s household to go to a land that He would show him. Abraham obeyed, and as a result, God made a covenant with him, found in:
Genesis 12:2-3, NIV “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
Abraham’s obedience didn’t just bless him; it established a legacy of faith and favour that extended to his descendants. Through his lineage came Isaac, Jacob, and ultimately Jesus Christ, through whom all nations are blessed. This is the power of obedience—it doesn’t just affect us but also those who come after us.
In Genesis 6:8-9, 22 (NIV), there’s the story of Noah. “But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord… Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.” Noah obeyed God by building the ark, and he and his family were saved from the flood.
Then there was Joseph in Genesis 39:2-4, 21-23 (NIV) where we see that Joseph’s obedience, even in suffering, led to him becoming second-in-command over Egypt and saving nations from famine. “The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered… Potiphar put him in charge of his household.”
Looking at Moses in Exodus 3:10-12, 14:21-22 (NIV) - Israel was freed from slavery, and Moses led them toward the Promised Land. Moses obeyed God’s call to lead Israel out of Egypt, and God parted the Red Sea to protect them.
In Joshua 1:7-9, 6:2-5, 20 (NIV), we see where God told Joshua to be strong and obey the Law, and he will be successful. When Joshua obeyed God’s command to march around Jericho, the walls fell, and Israel conquered the city.
Jehoshaphat also sought God in battle, and God told him the battle belonged to Him. When they praised God, their enemies destroyed themselves, and Israel won without fighting. 2 Chronicles 20:15-17, 22 (NIV).
In the book of Ruth 2:12, 3:10-11 (NIV), there is the record of how Ruth’s obedience in following Naomi and trusting God led her to find favour with Boaz, leading to marriage and becoming part of Jesus’ lineage.
Also, remember Esther? Esther obeyed Mordecai and risked her life to approach the king. God gave her favour, and she saved the Jews from destruction. Esther 2:17, 4:16, 8:7-8 (NIV).
There are other accounts of David's obedience in 1 Samuel 17:45-47, 2 Samuel 7:8-9 (NIV) when he defeated Goliath gaining favour with the people, and where God later established his kingdom, promising his lineage would last forever.
Daniel in Daniel 1:8-9, 6:22-23 (NIV) where Daniel refused to defile himself and was given wisdom and favour with the king. Even when thrown into the lions’ den for praying, God shut the lions’ mouths and rescued him.
There was breakthrough for Peter when he was out fishing and wasn't catching any fish. He obeyed Jesus’ command to cast his net again and he caught so many fish that his boat nearly sank. Luke 5:4-6 (NIV).
And we can also recall where Paul and Silas obeyed God by preaching, they were imprisoned, but they praised God anyhow. An earthquake freed them, and even the jailer’s family was saved. Acts 16:25-26 and 30-34 (NIV).
On the other hand, Family, we see other cases where people suffered the consequences of disobedience.
A case often referenced is that of the Israelites. Family, disobedience can bring such hardship.
God delivered the Israelites from Egypt with mighty signs and wonders, yet their repeated disobedience kept them wandering in the wilderness for forty years. God promised them a land flowing with milk and honey, but their unbelief and rebellion delayed their breakthrough.
Numbers 14:22-23 records God’s response to their disobedience: “Not one of those who saw my glory and the signs I performed in Egypt and in the wilderness but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times—not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their ancestors. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it.”
The Israelites' disobedience cost them the blessing that was meant for them. However, when the next generation chose to obey, under the leadership of Joshua, they entered the Promised Land and experienced the fullness of God’s blessings.
This illustrates an important truth: while generational curses can exist, they can be broken when we choose to walk in obedience. We thank God again today that no generational curse is greater than any blessing of the Lord. Amen?! Because through Christ, we have the power to break free from generational curses and step into generational blessings.
Can any of us relate any examples from our own lives where we can say, yes, God did it for me too? Or where we can honestly say: if I was obedient to the Voice of the Lord this terrible thing would not have happened?
Family, both situations can extend through generations and I am sure we are all realizing that.
We are more than grateful for the life of Jesus Christ when He walked the earth. It's a model we must follow.
Jesus demonstrated the ultimate obedience. Philippians 2:8 (NIV) says, “And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!”
Through Jesus' obedience, He broke the curse of sin and opened the door for us to walk in God’s blessings. Because of His sacrifice, we are no longer bound by the sins of past generations. And oh I am so happy for that. Thank You Jesus. Because I don't know about you, but my sins were many and horrible. Thank God for forgiveness, deliverance, breakthrough, redemption, salvation
Galatians 3:13-14 (NIV) declares, “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: ‘Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.’ He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.”
This means, Family, that if our biological family is known for constant failure, poverty, brokenness, drug addiction, molestation, no matter what, we do not have to continue in that cycle. Through Christ, we can step into a new generational blessing of peace, provision, purpose, success, newness of life., wellness.
Practically speaking, walking in obedience means aligning our daily choices with God’s word. It’s not about doing what we feel like when we feel like. If we are truly hearing the Voice of God and want to reap the blessings of eternal life, we must act like it.
Deuteronomy 28:1-2 (NIV) reminds us of the blessings that follow obedience: “If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God.”
These blessings include favour in our work, protection from enemies, fruitful families, and abundance in every area of life. And one thing we have to remember is that obedience isn’t just about avoiding sin. It goes further than that. Obedience is also about actively pursuing God’s best for us. It means forgiving when it’s hard, giving generously, staying faithful in trials, and trusting His timing even when things don’t make sense.
A modern example of this might be someone who grew up in a home where financial struggle was the norm, because you always borrow so you always owe, living pay check to pay check. Or you're living above your means, spending what you don't have.
So if you were raised in that environment you could find yourself continuing that cycle, or you could choose to obey God’s principles of giving, tithing, and wise financial management. Over time, we would see the blessings of provision and stability, which could then be passed down to our children.
Family, the same applies to spiritual inheritance. A person from a lineage of addiction can choose to break that pattern by surrendering their life to Christ, seeking healing, and building a new legacy of faith, freedom, and wholeness for future generations.
Essentially, the decision is ours. Once we are alive, it is not too late. I believe that.
Will we continue in the patterns of the past, or will we walk in the power of God’s blessings?
Obedience is the key to generational breakthrough. When we choose to follow God wholeheartedly, we don’t just change our lives, we change the future of those who come after us and even those around us.
