The Power of Words: Breaking Negative Agreements Over Your Life
This is a study that has the potential to save relationships.
In fact, I dare say, had I been privy to this information years ago, my marriage could have been saved and friendships lost could have been flourishing today.
But a lot of us were dropped into this life, left to float on our own and not knowing any better, though we tried to keep our heads above water, we failed over and over again.
Thank God we are still alive and it's never too late to learn, if not for ourselves, to teach someone else. Amen?!
One thing in my life I learnt the hard way is this: "Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose." That's Proverbs 18:21 (MSG).
This is one of the most popular scriptures in the Bible, more often quoted from the King James Version which says: "Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof."
The scripture emphasizes the power of words to either build up or destroy. What we speak over ourselves and others can shape our lives for better or worse.
This is a reminder for us to be intentional with our words, choosing to speak life, blessings, and faith instead of negativity.
Today we look at the topic: The Power of Words: Breaking Negative Agreements Over Our Lives.
The words we speak are not just empty sounds—they are spiritual seeds that can carry either blessings or curses, not only over our own lives but also over the generations that come after us. The Bible teaches that spoken words can shape destinies, transfer generational patterns, and either build or destroy future generations.
Ecclesiastes 5:6 (NKJV) tells us: "Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your excuse and destroy the work of your hands?"
Many of us have unknowingly spoken words that have opened doors to generational struggles—words of doubt, failure, sickness, or fear—just as previous generations may have done. But God has given us the power to break these agreements and establish new blessings over our families.
When we look through our lineage, we realize that the negative words that have been spoken over families have become agreements that repeat across generations. These can manifest as cycles of poverty, broken relationships, fear, addiction, or even sickness.
In Lamentations 5:7 (NLT) it is written: "Our ancestors sinned, but they have died— and we are suffering the punishment they deserved!"
This is a reality that many experience today: suffering the consequences of past generations.
However, in Christ, we are not bound by generational sins. Glory to God. We have the authority to cancel these agreements and establish God’s promises instead.
How so?
Just as negative words can carry curses, declarations of faith can break them. Let me repeat that for somebody. Just as negative words can carry curses, declarations of faith can break them.
In the book of Jeremiah 3:17 (NLT) it says: "From now on, this city shall be called The Throne of the Lord, and all nations shall gather to honor the name of the Lord. They will no longer stubbornly follow their own evil desires."
Even a cursed city was renamed and redefined by the power of God’s words.
In the same way, Family, you and I can rename our family’s destiny through faith-filled declarations.
So instead of saying:
❌ “This sickness runs in our family.” We claim God's promise in Jeremiah 30:17 (NIV): → ✅ "But I will restore you to health and heal your wounds."
❌ “We’ll always struggle financially.” → We declare according to Deuteronomy 28:11 (ESV) that ✅ "The Lord will make you (us) abound in prosperity, in the fruit of your (our) womb, and in the fruit of your (our) livestock, and in the fruit of your (the) ground."
Something else we often say:
❌ “No one in our family has ever had a good marriage.” → But God, speaking through His prophet, in Jeremiah 32:39 (NIV) says: ✅ "I will give them singleness of heart and action, so that they will always fear me and that all will go well for them and for their children after them."
We have already identified many of these and other negative beliefs that have been passed down through words and actions. But today, we continue to seek the Lord for deliverance, knowing that they can be broken!
Truth is, while some families inherit curses, the Bible shows that we can inherit blessings through obedience and faith.
Psalm 102:28 (NLT) tells us: "The children of your people will live in security. Their children’s children will thrive in your presence."
God’s promise is clear: we can speak and establish blessings that will outlive us. Our declarations today will affect the next generation.
Thank God it is not too late for us to watch our words. Thank God that in Christ, every generational curse can be broken and replaced with generational blessings.
Isaiah 61:7 (NKJV) "Instead of your shame you shall have double honor, and instead of confusion they shall rejoice in their portion. Therefore in their land they shall possess double; everlasting joy shall be theirs."
Family, you have heard me say many times right here that this is a struggle I had. But note I am speaking in the past tense. I know where I am coming from as far as this struggle is concerned and no-one is going to tell me that I haven't changed. Because I know I have been delivered.
Let us remember Family, that we are not bound by past words. Let no-one keep you in your past in terms of what you used to say and how you used to speak in an angry, condescending or condemnatory manner.
Some people may have some work to do still in this area, but today can be the day when you break old agreements and start a new legacy of blessings with the power of your words.
Together, let us declare life, and freedom, and victory over this and future generations.
