Healing & Wholeness: How to Break Free from Generational Sickness
Generational sickness is a real thing, and it shows up in different ways: physically, emotionally, and mentally.
There are families who struggle with conditions passed down through their bloodline, such as diabetes, heart disease, depression, anxiety, addiction, and even patterns of abuse.
Many persons often say, well, this runs in my family so I cant do anything about it. The devil is a liar. Admittedly, there are times when we are going through these afflictions and we get overwhelmed because no amount of tablets and treatment seem to be working.
The cycle seems unbreakable. But thanks be to God, through Christ, we have the power to break free.
Family, the Bible reminds us in Exodus 20:5-6 (NIV) about generational consequences, but we thank God for His mercy that never fails. The Word says: “I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.”
So as we recognize these generational sicknesses for what they are, let us give them to God and do what we need to do to conquer them in Jesus Name.
✅Physical Sickness – For example, in some families, you find that you can look back through your bloodline and see the same complaint - high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes. While genetics play a role, spiritual strongholds such as fear, unhealthy lifestyles, or curses spoken over families may also contribute.
✅Emotional Sickness – Cycles of abuse, rejection, abandonment, and broken relationships seem to be the norm in some families. A family history of trauma can make it difficult for members to form healthy bonds and trust others.
✅Mental Sickness – Depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts can be passed down when families are trapped in cycles of fear, shame, or unresolved pain. While some may give in and feel like this isn’t going away, we are encourage to take a stand and change our mindset, knowing that God can break every fetter, hallelujah, God provides healing.
So how do we break free? Through Christ. Only with the help of God.
1.Family, we must recognize and renounce the stronghold. “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6, NIV). We must first acknowledge these generational patterns and renounce them in Jesus’ name. What has been tolerated in the past does not have to continue.
2.Stand on God’s Promises. “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36, NIV). Jesus has already won the victory over sickness and bondage. Meditate on His promises and declare healing over your life and family.
3.Change the Narrative Through Faith and Action. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2, NIV). Generational sickness often persists when families repeat the same habits, beliefs, and behaviours. Commit to a renewed mind by aligning with God’s Word and taking practical steps toward healing.
4.The Role of Family and the Church. Family members can offer support through encouragement, prayer, and accountability. If a family member struggles with addiction or mental health issues, be a source of strength, not condemnation. Proverbs 17:17 (NIV) says, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.” Be that loving support.
As it relates to the Church: The body of Christ must embrace those battling generational sicknesses with love and grace. Galatians 6:2 (NIV) instructs us, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” This means creating safe spaces for healing, providing resources, and offering intercessory prayer.
So as we close, the encouragement is: Even if these aches and pains don't stop, let our spirit take hold of God’s healing power. Claim your healing every moment of every day.
Choose to reject generational sickness by standing firm in your faith, surrounding yourself with godly support, and walking in obedience to God's Word.
Let us declare over our lives and family: “But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15, NIV).
Healing begins with a decision to trust God, and wholeness follows as we walk in His truth.
