Thursday - The Road to Purpose: Walking with the Risen Christ
Purpose, from a biblical perspective, is not merely about achieving goals or fulfilling personal ambitions. It is about living in alignment with the will of God, understanding why we were created, and walking daily in the good works that God has prepared for us.
Ephesians 2:10 (KJV) says, "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."
Our purpose is rooted in Christ. It's not something we find in the world or manufacture ourselves; it is something revealed to us as we walk with Him.
This is why the image of a road is so powerful. A road implies movement, direction, and a journey. It suggests that we are not meant to stay in one place spiritually, emotionally, or mentally. Instead, we are to journey forward with intention. But here's the thing—it's not just about walking; it's about who we're walking with.
The road to purpose is only meaningful if Christ is on that road with us. Can I tell you? There was a time in my life when I leaned on someone, well maybe a few different people at different points in my life, more than I relied on Jesus. And where did that leave me? Out in the cold! Did I learn the lesson? Oh yes now I have! For sure! So it’s me and my Jesus and everyone else comes after.
Luke 24 gives us a beautiful account of the risen Christ walking on the road to Emmaus with two disciples. They didn’t even realize it was Him at first, but as He walked with them, spoke with them, and broke bread with them, their eyes were opened.
Luke 24:32 (KJV) says, "And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?" When Christ walks with us, our hearts are set on fire with purpose and understanding.
But let’s be real—we can’t walk this road alone and expect to fulfill our divine purpose. John 15:5 (KJV) reminds us, "I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing."
That’s clear and direct. Is it not?
Without Christ, our walk is powerless, fruitless, and directionless.
Many people are on roads today that lead to nowhere, chasing dreams that God never authored, walking paths that He never ordained. It would be well for all of us to accept that if Christ is not on the road with us, we will eventually run out of strength, clarity, and joy.
Now, as we walk this road, we must do it with intentional honesty. The life that we are called to live, especially as believers, demands a level of integrity and self-reflection that the world often discourages.
We have to ask ourselves the hard questions. Are we gossiping under the guise of concern? Are we harbouring unforgiveness while raising hands in worship? Are we lying, cheating, or engaging in sexual immorality like adultery and fornication while claiming to walk in holiness? Are we neglecting the Word of God, giving it only a passing glance during Sabbath or Sunday service?
Some serious soul searching questions there.
James 1:22-24 (KJV) confronts us with this truth: "But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was."
Family, the road to purpose demands that we stop and look in the mirror, not just once, but regularly. We must deal with the small things, the seemingly "harmless" habits, because these are often the cracks where the enemy gains entry.
Walking with the risen Christ means living in the light, not in shadows. It means letting go of sin, both big and small, and choosing daily to walk in truth, grace, and obedience.
1 John 1:7 (KJV) says, "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."
Family, this is not about perfection, because none of us is perfect. This is about progression. Step by step, moment by moment. It’s about choosing Christ every single day, and allowing Him to shape our walk, our talk, our thoughts, and our actions.
So today, let us ask ourselves: Who am I walking with? Is Christ beside me on this road, or have I taken a detour?
Remember now, the road to purpose is not paved with comfort and convenience. It’s paved with surrender, faith, repentance, and truth. And it leads to life—real life, the kind that only Christ can give.
